Reactor activations to constrain astrophysically relevant cross sections

نویسندگان

چکیده

The determination of astrophysically relevant neutron-induced cross sections is particularly difficult when the involved isotopes are radioactive or very small. Activation experiments at reactors offer possibility to overcome these limitations with high neutron fluxes. flux typically based on activation two monitors known separate different components. usually applied cadmium difference method allows a distinction between thermal and epithermal part. By combination linear functions representing both components can be determined. However, if more than used, system equations overdetermined, which identification probability distribution. In this proceeding, feasibility relevance demonstrated.

Molecular Hydrogen Formation on Astrophysically Relevant Surfaces

Recent experimental results about the formation of molecular hydrogen on astrophysically relevant surfaces under conditions close to those encountered in the interstellar medium are analyzed using rate equations. The parameters of the rate equation model are fitted to temperature-programmed desorption curves obtained in the laboratory. These parameters are the activation energy barriers for ato...

Laboratory spectroscopy of astrophysically relevant carbon species.

Carbon is one of the most common elements in the solar system, with a fractional abundance of 10(-4) relative to hydrogen. Thus, it is not surprising that over 100 carbon-bearing species have been definitively detected in the interstellar medium via their rotational, infrared, and/or electronic transitions. In order to identify these species, laboratory spectra are needed for comparison to astr...

ELECTRON-ION RECOMBINATION RATE COEFFICIENTS AND PHOTOIONIZATION CROSS SECTIONS FOR ASTROPHYSICALLY ABUNDANT ELEMENTS VI. Ni II

We present the first detailed ab initio quantum mechanical calculations for total and state-specific recombination rate coefficients for e + Ni III → Ni II. These rates are obtained using a unified treatment for total electron-ion recombination that treats the nonresonant radiative recombination and the resonant dielectronic recombination in a self-consistent unified manner in the close couplin...

Astrophysically Relevant Neutron Capture near the Border of Stability

The neutron capture cross section on Mg was measured in the astrophysically relevant energy region from 25 keV to 220 keV. The experimental results agree well with a calculation using the Direct Capture (DC) model together with systematic folding potentials. This experiment confirms for the Mg(n,γ)Mg reaction that the DC process is at least comparable to the Compound–Nucleus (CN) process. The r...

Solution-Relevant Abstractions Constrain Retrieval and Adaptation

A second problem in analogical reasoning, addressed for instance by Holyoak [7] and Gentner [5], is to choose from a variety of possible analogical mappings. As we shall show, solution-relevant abstractions can be exploited for this task as well. A third non-trivial job in the analogy procedure is to determine the reformulations (adaptations) of problems and solutions. To some extent the proofr...
